Situated to the north of Porto, the city of Barcelos is known for its handcrafted ceramics, especially by the Galo de Barcelos. The fortified medieval town stretches on a hill above the river Cavado, and its charming streets are flanked by Baroque houses. According to the city of Viana do Castelo, situated at the mouth of the river Lima, between sea and mountains, was, historically, a crucial point of departure during the age of discoveries, when many Portuguese explorers embarked to discover the world that was still unknown. At the foot of the Hill of Santa Luzia, the narrow cobbled streets are lined by beautiful palaces and mansions built over centuries. Ponte de Lima is known for its magnificent Roman bridge, beyond the market and the beautiful rural estates and old houses.
